What are the benefits of having a sibling?

1 ответ

I have a brother who is three years younger than me, and I think benefits of having a sibling multiply as you both get older. As younger kids, it is often hard for siblings to get along: there is a lot of competition for attention and fighting for the biggest slice of cake or the best seat in the car. Still, when you get a little older, this relationship changes completely, as you learn to appreciate each other.

Here is my personal list of benefits of having a sibling.

1. You learn to interact with peers from an early age

You do not realise it until later, but having a sibling since early age teaches you to interact with other kids. This is why going to school for the first time and making friends might not be such a challenge anymore – you’ve done it before!

2. You always have company

It works both ways: when you’re young, you have someone to do stuff with when parents are not home. When you are older, you can hang out because you already happen to have a lot in common.

3. You have a lifetime to learn to tolerate each other

Having grown up together, you learn to ignore a lot of annoying things about each other. We all know it takes a lot of time to get used to another person’s habits, and with your sibling you have many years of practice – that’s what makes you a great pair.

4. You happen to shape each other’s personalities

When you have little age difference, you watch each other becoming an adult. All teenagers go through rough patches, but when you have a sibling who can support you, you can avoid a lot of silly mistakes. Or, you make them together, which is fun as well.

5. You can stand up for each other

Whether it is a family fight, or an outside conflict, you always can rely on someone to protect you. After all, that’s what family is all about.

6. As you grow up, you can share new interests

This is the coolest moment when you realise that you can now share a new hobby with your sibling because you both reached the age when the interests can be shared. When you were little and had a few years age difference, it was a little more difficult. When you are not kids anymore, it becomes much easier to share interests and find interesting things to talk about.

P.S. I always wanted to do this.

This is such a great answer!

Btw, this video is so positive. I hope that I'll do this with my sibling one day.
